The TillerBuddy™ Wireless Horn is a professional-grade signaling device. It emits a 125dB blast—this is roughly the volume of a jet take-off or a jackhammer. It is designed to be heard over a loud engine from the other end of a long tunnel.

If you are testing the unit, please follow these rules to avoid permanent hearing damage:

• STAND BACK: Never trigger the horn while holding it or standing right next to it. Always place the unit down and stand at least 3 to 5 meters away before pressing the button.

• FACE IT AWAY: Ensure the horn is facing away from you (and any pets or bystanders) before testing.

• MOUNT FIRST, TEST SECOND: The safest way to test the horn is to mount it in its final position at the bow and walk back to the tiller before triggering it.

• THE "RINGING" RISK: At close range, a single blast can cause immediate "tunnel ringing" or acoustic trauma. Please do not underestimate the power of this unit.

The Strap-to-Tiller Remote Control features a pre-installed, high-grip silicone strap powered by neodymium magnets. Designed for a "Mount it or Wear it" application, the two ends of the strap fix magnetically into position, allowing you to transition between the tiller and your wrist in seconds.

Installation & Fitting

Because the strap is already secured to the remote housing, there is no complex threading or looping required. The magnetic connection provides a strong, reliable hold that mimics the ease of a magnetic watch band.

• To Mount on the Tiller: Wrap the two ends of the silicone strap around the tiller handle at your desired location. The neodymium magnets will snap together to lock the remote in place. The silicone material provides natural anti-slip resistance against the handle.

• To Wear on the Wrist: Simply wrap the strap around your wrist and let the magnetic ends meet. The adjustable nature of the magnets ensures a perfect fit for any wrist size.

Note: The combination of silicone friction and neodymium magnetic strength ensures the remote remains stable and secure, even when subjected to engine vibrations or rougher water conditions.

The V3 Remote is pre-programmed to control your entire Deckhand setup.

• Button 1 (Top): The Shield / Panic Mode Triggers the Horn + Red Flashing Beams.

• Buttons 2 & 3 (Middle): TillerBuddy Beams Independent control of your high-intensity Spot Lights.

• Button 4 (Bottom): Instant Horn Rapid access for signaling on blind bends.

Operational Logic (Important)

• Shared Frequency Visual Alarm: The Panic Button (Top) and the Horn Button (Bottom) operate on the same frequency. This is a deliberate safety feature: whenever you blast the horn, your Beams will also flash Red. This provides a vital visual alert alongside the audible one—perfect for noisy engine setups or drawing attention in an emergency.

• Panic Feature Safety (Momentary Action): The Panic feature is designed as a momentary action rather than a latched one. This ensures that if the button is pressed accidentally, the alarm cannot "lock on" and stay running. This protects your battery; the user can simply pulse the button as needed.

TillerBuddy™ Beams (LED Spotlights)

• Remote Operation: The V3 Remote activates the Beams on the brightest white setting for maximum navigation visibility.

• Manual Mode: The physical button on the light unit allows manual selection of other modes (Warm White/SOS) for use as a manual work light.

• Power: USB-C Rechargeable (4400mAh).

• OPTIONAL Lead Installation: Neatly trail the 5m Maintainer Leads from the bow to your nearest internal USB outlet. We recommend using small adhesive cable clips along the gunwale or cabin side for a clean, permanent look.

The Wireless Horn (Standalone Unit)

• Mounting: Uses the adjustable magnetic bracket. Attach to a roof overhang or cabin wall, ensuring the horn faces forward so your signal carries clearly down the cut.

• Power: USB-C Rechargeable. The unit remains in 24/7 standby for instant response.

• Installation (EverLink Edition Only): Use the provided 5m Maintainer Lead to connect to a permanent power source. Ensure the cable is secured to prevent snagging on lock walls, center lines, or gear.

The Wireless Relay (Integrated Kit)

• Function: For those who opted for the relay kit to wire into their boat's own electrical system, this module allows the V3 Remote to trigger your boat's existing 12v/24v horn.

• Installation: Please refer to the dedicated Relay Manual  for the specific wiring schematics and terminal guides.

Power Management & Journey Prep

The "Always-Ready" Standby System To ensure your units are ready to operate the moment you press the button, follow the guidance below. The units have an internal receiver that stays in a 24/7 "Active Listening" mode. This provides instant response but does create a small, constant draw on the batteries.

• Standby Expectations: From a full charge, the Horn unit will remain in standby for approximately 3-5 days and the Lights 5-7 days.

• The Pre-Departure Check: We strongly recommend checking the units power status as part of your pre-departure checklist. If your boat has been idle for more than a few days, the units may require a top-up.

• Best practice: Bring the units inside to charge via USB-C the night before you set off on a journey.

• TillerBuddys Recommendation: If you prefer not to remove the units from their mounting, you can use a standard USB cable (5 meter maximum) to keep the battery maintained at full state 24/7 (see our EverLink Edition for details). This is a great way to maintain your safety equipments full charge state without needing to move the device.

LIGHTS EXTENDED: Understanding the LED Indicators The four LEDs on the back (25, 50, 75, 100) indicate your current battery level.

• While Charging: The lights will Flash to show progress.

• While Operating/Standby: The lights stay Steady On to show the current remaining capacity.

• Full Charge: When the 100% LED stops flashing and stays Steady On while the cable is plugged in, the battery is fully saturated.

The "75% Voltage Threshold" (Important) The four LEDs on the back (25, 50, 75, 100) measure battery voltage. However, the wireless receivers inside these units require a minimum of 3.7V to operate in their "efficiency zone."

• At 75%–100%: The battery voltage is above 3.7V. The receiver runs efficiently and can maintain standby for roughly a week.

• Below 75%: The battery voltage drops below the receiver's optimal threshold. In this lower voltage state, the receiver actually depletes the remaining battery considerably faster as it struggles to maintain a connection.

The Charging "Tell-Tale" You can observe this battery chemistry yourself during the charging process. It is the best indicator of how the power is actually distributed:

• The Surface Charge (0% to 75%): Takes only 20–30 minutes. This fills the battery quickly but lacks "depth."

• The Saturation Phase (75% to 100%): Takes 4–5 hours. This is the most critical part of the charge, where the battery reaches the stable voltage required for long-term standby.

💡 THE TILLERBUDDY GOLDEN RULE For 100% reliability, treat 50% as Empty. If you use the light and see it drop below the 75% mark, it must be charged back to a Solid 100% before being left on standby. If left overnight at 50% or 25%, the receiver's increased drain at low voltage will likely result in a flat battery by morning (see table below).

💡 PRO-TIP Bring the units inside to charge until the 100% light is solid each night, or after any usage of half an hour or more.

Charging Requirements

• High-Output Charging: Always use a modern USB-C charger (2A or higher).

• The "Steady On" Rule: The charging process is only complete when the 100% LED stops blinking. Unplugging while the 100% light is still flashing means the battery has not reached the stable voltage needed to support the wireless receiver long-term.

USB Management Hack (Daisy-Chaining)

If your boat has limited USB outlets or you only have one plug available, you can charge all three units from a single power source by "daisy-chaining" them.

How to do it: Plug the Horn into the first Light, plug that light into the second Light, and connect the second light to your USB outlet.

⚠️ Note: Because the charging current is being shared across three devices, the total time to reach a "Solid 100%" charge will be significantly longer than charging a single unit.

OPTIONAL  USB LEADS (Continuous Power)

Battery monitoring and voltage thresholds are no longer a daily concern.

But remember you can unplug and use them as wireless components at any point the cables are simply for battery power maintaining so charge concerns are not a worry.

• Set-and-Forget: By using the 5m Maintainer Leads, your units remain permanently connected to your boat's USB power source.

• Continuous Saturated Charge: The EverLink system keeps the battery locked at the "Saturation Phase" (100%), ensuring the wireless receivers always have the maximum 3.7V+ required for instant response.

• Zero Maintenance: You do not need to remove units for charging. The system is ready for 24/7 action, even after months of boat inactivity.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: If you choose to unplug your devices from the leads (e.g., for storage or temporary wireless use), you MUST follow the Part A: Standard Edition rules of operation. Once disconnected, the units will revert to standard standby drain and will require manual monitoring and recharging until the leads are reconnected.

💡 Routing Tips: > Most narrowboat owners find they can neatly route the Maintainer Leads into the cabin by:

• Window Seals: Most modern hopper or sliding windows have enough "give" in the rubber seal to allow the slim cable to pass through while remaining weather-tight.

• Mushroom Vents: Feeding the cable through a bow-end mushroom vent is a great way to keep the exterior run as short as possible.

• Cratch Covers: If you have a front cover, the cables can simply be tucked under the skirt and run through the front doors.

💡 The Hidden "Power Bridge" Feature (Optional & Modular see images examples below)

The REMOTE Lights feature a High-Capacity Power Out port. While originally intended for charging mobile devices, we have utilized this to allow for a Daisy-Chain setup.

The beauty of this system is its versatility. There is no "right" way to wire it—only the way that best fits your boat's layout.

Common Wiring Variations:

• The Full Chain (The "One-Wire" Bow): Run one 5m cable from the cabin to a Beam, then bridge to the second Beam, and finally to the Horn. Best for keeping the entire bundle powered from a single USB port.

• The Split System (Front & Back): Daisy-chain one Beam and the Horn at the bow, while the second Beam stays at the stern on its own power source as a dedicated "Work Light."

• The Horn-First Hybrid: If your USB port is closest to the Horn, power it directly and run the Beams on their own separate chain or individually.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

No Pairing Required: Your Deckhand Bundle is hand-configured and pre-paired to horn and lights before shipping.

If a device is not responding:

1. Check Battery: Ensure the Horn and Beams are charged via USB-C (note the standby life in battery management above). If the V3 Remote signal becomes weak, replace the internal CR2032 battery.

2. Range: Ensure there are no massive lead-lined obstructions between the remote and the receivers.

Quick Reference: Remote Button Layouts

V3 Remote (Vertical Pad)

• Button 1 (Top): Panic (Horn + Red Beams)

• Button 2 (2nd Down): Beam A (Auto-Disarm / Unlock)

• Button 3 (3rd Down): Beam B (Auto-Wake / Wake)

• Button 4 (Bottom): Horn Only

Important: Managing the Movement Alarm & Auto-Disarm (For Products purchased Before March 27, 2026)

Background: The TillerBuddy Horn utilizes a high-quality internal circuit originally designed for security applications. While we have adapted this for marine use, a motion-triggered "Lock" feature remains dormant in the background. In very rare cases—such as a stray frequency from a nearby vessel—this feature may be activated, causing the horn to pulse when it detects movement.

The Solution:

1. The "Self-Healing" Remote Feature: Your TillerBuddy Beam A control is now integrated with the horn’s disarm system. If your horn has been accidentally armed, simply toggling Beam A will automatically send an "Unlock" signal to reset the system to its normal navigation settings.

Where to find Beam A:

• On the V3 Remote (Vertical Pad): This is the second button down from the top.

2. The Master Remote (Manual Backup): If your primary remote does not resolve the issue, take your Master Remote and press the Unlock (Top Right) button. This instantly disarms the motion sensor and returns the horn to its normal state.

Pro-Tip for Cruising: We recommend toggling TillerBuddy Beam A on and off as part of your pre-departure checklist. This ensures the system is Disarmed and the horn is out of "Sleep Mode" before you leave the dock.

Deckhand bundles bought after the above date have horns with no internal alarm system as our new models have had the components removed.
